about

The Toronto winter of 2016 would seem, to most, an unlikely time and place for the emergence of a record reminiscent of an evening spent meandering through sun baked desert dunes. Somehow, though, on their self-titled debut EP, Sahara were able to overcome the frigid landscape afforded them and approach the spring with an album that feels like it’s never even seen a snowflake. Channeling The Durutti Column and other early-era Factory Records releases, the trio (singer/guitarist Andrew Wilson, guitarist Joseph Elaschuk, and bassist Kayla Devito) draw from those influences, as well as time spent playing in like-minded recent Toronto acts like Little Girls and Mausoleum, to bring forward five tracks of psych-tinged post-punk with a shimmering, summery sound that belies some of their darker leanings.
